Powered tethers have been around for some time but it is limited in it's uses. I guess it depends on your application.

I see it as a straight up and down only UAV. You couldn't fly it out too far without worrying about it wrapping around something. As for the 500ft altitude or above, what happened to the FAA 400ft limit?

The new suggested height is 500' for when new rules come out. The old 400' and associated guidelines are 'suggestions', not laws.
