Doing what you did is exactly what could get us all grounded forever. Nobody can give you permission to fly that high in controlled airspace. You could easily have caused the next headline "drone causes commercial airline to crash". This is a great hobby but it comes with responsibilities. We teeter on the edge of drones being made illegal constantly. This kind of flight is what they would use to justify it.

As of now there are no longer guidelines or rules but in fact these are now laws to adhere to, which means the FAA is most certainly going to start making examples of people violating them. You are a prime candidate believe that..

There was a time not to long ago before the 333 exemption or part 107 in which the FAA was issuing cease and desist letters to real estate agents. I don't know what kind of man power is being used currently to bust those who blatantly disregard the rules.

Interestingly enough, the 400ft thing is not actually a law for hobby use. In fact, the FAA deferred to the AMA'a guidelines on altitude. The AMA guidelines say max 400ft within 3 miles of an airport, which this guy is and he busted. Outside of that, the AMA guidelines simply encourage you to not go above 400fit unless it is for good reason. There are plenty of good reasons, just use your head. This is of course not withstanding written airspace restrictions, such as the Washington DC SFRA that explicitly limits model aircraft to 400ft by law.
With that said, careless and reckless operation of an aircraft is still a law. And if you have an incident cruising around at 2000ft, you're going to have a really hard time explaining why it was not careless and reckless.

And..... there is even an exception for pt. 107 pilots. We are allowed to fly up to 400 ft above the highest point of a tower or structure as long as we remain within a 400 ft radius of it. This is how you are able to inspect 600 ft turbines or 2000 ft radio masts.
One of the communities that were absolutely losing it until the FAA gave clarification on the 400ft rule were sailplane pilots, as most thermals can take you far above that, and many competitions would not be possible (or very long/interesting) with that low a flight ceiling.
Yessir! I think this is a very reasonable and fair way to keep it so both communities can be happy.
400 feet above ground is the MAX you can operate in the USA plus you can not fly closer then 5 miles from a airport at ANY alt. I'm a ATP rated pilot that loves fling RC things and if we have a midair between a drone and and aircraft (no matter how big or small) we can kiss are drones goodbye. So please read the rules and FOLLOW them.

Gents, this might be the dumbest person on the planet and the funniest thread I have read on this forum. I have little to add other then to say stupid people with their guns would have gotten them outlawed 100 years ago if not for the fact the right to own one is written into our constitution. Drones are not and therefore they are one simple mistake away from being outlawed. I don't understand why but the media hates Drones with a passion and the masses line up to hear and believe everything the media believes (yes I left out report on). So we should enjoy our drones now as it will not be very long that they are as legal as M-80's are on the 4th of July. NO I don't want to be that dude that is used for the example. I don't fly over freeways or any populated urban areas because I know that we can be made an example of in multiple ways. (Not just flying to high by an airport at night) 2-5 years from now we can tell our kids stories about drones we use to fly just like my old man tells me stories about real fire works they used on the 4th of July. It is not "if" it is just a "when"

The media doesn't hate drones. News media is a business. Businesses require profit. Profit comes from people clicking on stories or watching them on TV. The media tells their target audience what they want to hear. More mouse clicks and viewers. More money. Sensational drone stories draw in millions of mouse clicks.
I hear ya but don't agree with that theory across the board. That said as it relates to drones you may have a point. Joe public mostly believes drones are used by their creepy neighbors to spy in their windows. The hatred might simply be something media has taped into to exploit. Funny thing is when people walk by an actual see me filming a shore line, a sunset over the water, or wedding then they get it. You can actually watch the expression on their face change. If you happen to mention the hobby in a conversation then you are looked at as pervert. <sigh>

I've had people ask "Can you spy on people with that?" I tell them does it sound like I can spy on someone?? Do you think those flashing lights are for camouflage?
I think we're overlooking something pretty major here........ how did he get to 2300ft plus with 70% battery remaining? Plus that's an awfully good picture for a drone that's 2300ft away. I fly about 500 ft out and my feed is getting compression artifacts to beat the band.
I think we've questions that need answering... before he gets fined and has to tell his drone.... Ohhhhh if he has to sell it to pay the fine... what's he asking, and does it come with a gimbal?

He went 2300 feet in 3.5 minutes thats 11.4 feet per second at 7.5 mph I think its do-able or maybe my Math is way off and shiettt.....?
Edit: According to site scan the Solo has a max climb rate of 4/ms in stabilized mode or 8.95 mph.
In 3.5 minutes he could of went up to 2,760 feet, so yeah he's Guilty as charged..
