Smart Shot Idea: Jib Mode

I was playing with relatively close-in cable cam shots over the weekend, and I was able to get some pretty nice results. However, I really would have loved the ability to emulate a large jib move.

What I'm imagining is essentially a two-point cable cam, with the addition of a curve and pivot point. Set the pivot point, radius, then pick a start and end camera position. It adds another dynamic dimension to the shot.

I think the Tower app and turning an orbit around is close, but you can't preset camera positions and have to wing it. Any thoughts here would be appreciated.

It almost sounds like an orbit smartshot in the regular app and then only playing half of it while adjusting the camera in realtime, except you aren't setting 2 points. But the 2 points would just be the diameter points of the circle. You can also enlarge the radius in realtime to make more of a spiral. Not exactly what you are asking, but I think the end result is almost if not the same.

Can you free-point the camera in orbit? I thought it always was locked on the orbit point.

It's locked on the target, but you can control pitch. I see what you're saying now and I think I was misunderstanding.

Imagine the types of moves shown here:

The more I think about it, I may be able to achieve a SIMILAR move with a carefully setup multi-point cable cam...Back to the testing ground!

Stll - the ease of setup of orbit, with the camera adding a start end along an arch would still be pretty damn sweet.

I think you can get something close with a 3 point arc. if you define start, middle, and end, in an arc shape, Solo should plot the flight path.

cable cam can do what you want. you just have to plan it properly. multipoint cable cam can mimic any jib and most motion control rigs.

Frank how much splining is there in the curves between saved points in MPCC?

If for example you put 5 points in a half circle arc does the Solo fly 4 straight segments or does it smooth out those three middle transitions to make a graceful arc?

Also does the size of the arc impact any smoothing that might occur?

It does spline the direction changes, both horizontal and vertical. It's not a huge curve. It seems like just enough to smooth them out.

its definitely smooth between them and because its a drone you have the luxury of having the points on different axes along with yaw (pan) and gimbal pitch (tilt).

the spacing between the points do affect the smoothing. the further apart they are, the 'looser' the curve is. that's why sometimes you have to have add an extra point in between to get more control.

here is an up and over. 5 points. point 3 was overhead, gimbal straight down and solo yawed 180 degrees.

Thanks for the replies. Looking forward to seeing how much more control, ability to edit, access to save and name Smart Shots they provide in the mention updates.

Being able to get at the files to move them to a safe storage location is a priority for me, since reinstalling looses everything. I have some MPCCs that I would like to repeat many times over the course of a year and fear that at some point I will have to do the recommended "delete and reinstall" routine.
