Go over to DIY drones. There are already implementations working. Lots of advice on the best hardware. You'll need to warm up your soldering iron - haven't seen any using the expansion port. Also Sonar and other cool mods. Not much in Solo group. Start in arducopter group. Also check out Iris group.
