When I first purchased Solo the only experience I had flying quadcopters were the little toy class Hubsans and Symas. Since then I've scratch built a few and have a newfound appreciation for what Solo has under the hood. I tried to build a GPS based quadcopter with pretty good results but nowhere near what a fully loaded Pixhawk build is capable of.
During this build I went thru the pains for getting the GPS and magnetometer configured correctly. Placing these components in the frame came with their own challenges like mounting and making sure everything fit. It was a bumpy road but I finally was able to accomplish decent position hold and return to home on my build.
In comparison though, the Solo is so damn rock solid when it comes to loiter and position hold. I guess the point of this post was to express that people often take what solo does for granted. I am more impressed with Solo's GPS performance after having had the opportunity to try and build one myself. Granted the parts used are apples and oranges and can't really compare (Tau labs vs 3DR) but at the end of the day I think people should never forget how complex the software under the hood is and what it takes just to get solo to hover solidly in space.
So the next time you're flying Solo please appreciate all the hidden magic that makes it possible for you to peer into the video feed without thinking about piloting the ship.
