When I first purchased Solo the only experience I had flying quadcopters were the little toy class Hubsans and Symas. Since then I've scratch built a few and have a newfound appreciation for what Solo has under the hood. I tried to build a GPS based quadcopter with pretty good results but nowhere near what a fully loaded Pixhawk build is capable of.

During this build I went thru the pains for getting the GPS and magnetometer configured correctly. Placing these components in the frame came with their own challenges like mounting and making sure everything fit. It was a bumpy road but I finally was able to accomplish decent position hold and return to home on my build.

In comparison though, the Solo is so damn rock solid when it comes to loiter and position hold. I guess the point of this post was to express that people often take what solo does for granted. I am more impressed with Solo's GPS performance after having had the opportunity to try and build one myself. Granted the parts used are apples and oranges and can't really compare (Tau labs vs 3DR) but at the end of the day I think people should never forget how complex the software under the hood is and what it takes just to get solo to hover solidly in space.

So the next time you're flying Solo please appreciate all the hidden magic that makes it possible for you to peer into the video feed without thinking about piloting the ship.

I couldn't agree more.

I especially chose the Solo because although the DJI Phantoms are decent the fact that they keep coming out with new ones made me not consider them.

I really appreciate 3DR's approach to buying just one drone and expand it through software and even leave everything to be modular to be upgraded in the future.

The fact that the Solo has a dedicated Linux computer alone made me excited to get this and I'm glad I did.

The only thing the Solo requires is a tremendous amount of patience for great things to come and it's definitely worth it.

I tot when I first bought a Solo, with only Phantom 1 experience, the software/firmwate update on Solo was a lot of work.... so I thought.
Now that I just got a P3 Adv , because of price reduction to US$800 ....bloody hell I needed to update the drone and controller firmware which is simply NOTHING like Solo. There is no info that I need to activate by making an account ( no such info in DJI website today, old link goes 404), no account I can't fly the P3A :) Youtube and Google was how I solved it.

The workflow to do firmware update on P3A is so Jurassic Park compared to Solo....LOL.
The dumb-azz beeping sound on the P3A drone firmware update process is so lame & stupid, I needed memory card based FW update to work.

On the Solo its all laid out nicely on the App ( Jan 2016 purchase ) what to do A>>B>>C, its all so easy and friendly.

3DR put a lot of work into making things easy for me , who is a totally newbie for smart drone 101, to start a first flight process.

P1 was not a smart drone, it was a training drone which I never even bother to do firmware update.

Thanks 3DR.
