I figured out how to get map data into the App so that a satellite map shows on the iPad screen.

Page 40 of the Manual explains:

"A live map view is normally available only with GPS lock and on devices with mobile data (cellular Internet).
With a Wi-Fi only iOS device, you can cache map data automatically by connecting to the Internet, then opening the map in the Solo App and navigating to the area you want to map. Then, when you connect the device to Solo, the App automatically remembers the map."

To see the map, go into the screen for the smart shot (so far this only works for me in Orbit), and swipe left from the right edge of the screen. About 1/3 of the screen will show a satellite map. Swipe left again and the map goes full screen, with the FPV from Solo in a small split screen in the upper left corner. To return to the original screen tap in the split screen. You can rotate the map view with a two finger motion, and zoom in/out with pinch just as on a smartphone.
