I tested the same issue exists with ios 11.02 and i restated once I had the blank screen the app and the recording worked fine after that.

Not everybody. I have only used iOS for two years now. The 3DR app is buggy with iOS 11 right now, but it's still useable.

Just an update - same issue on 11.03 with an iPhone 7 plus. Couldn't figure out what it was (flew my 3DR for the first time yesterday; had it for a year) but this thread confirmed what I was seeing. I had to exit out of the 3DR app and go back into it. Almost begs getting a dedicated iPad mini and just running iOS 10 on it.

Side pilot looks a lot like Tower. Can you control smart shots and select flight modes (fly, Acro, etc) with it?

Smart shots are not currently supported according to the information noted in the App Store.
