solo gimbal and non-gopro action cam

After holding out since solo came out, I finally purchased the solo bundle. so far, the solo gimbal is still in the box because I don't own a gopro cam and gopro cam doesn't fit my need. Hence here is my questions:

what other action cam that can be used with solo gimbal?

what other gimbal that can fit into solo without a lot of mod?

Your fist question, none. Your second question, that depends on how much effort you want to put into building your own custom mount and electronic interface. If you're asking the first question, my guess would be the short answer to this is also none.

There are GoPro knockoffs out on the market. I'm not sure about their differences in weight though. So, unofficially it may be possible to use one of those action cams. Controlling it on the other hand, totally different animal. They all either require wifi or can only be controlled via buttons. Either case, you won't get far with it.

What are you looking for that the GoPro does not provide?

I am assuming the Host means he doesn't like what the GoPro offers, he is looking for higher quality but with the GoPros form factor to use the Gimbal. All answers are no unfortunately. If you wanted something that could carry more then you should have gone with another pre-built or a custom job. The Solo might be bloody impressive in the brains department but it is, and always be the GoPro drone.

I replaced the cam holder of the gimbal with a 3d print holder. I retain the gimbal function + video feed to groundstation but I lost the camera control (for now). Gopro is not only over-priced. It lacks the multi-spectrum that is critical for survey application.

Does anyone know the pinout for the gopro connection.


I used APM base UAV for few years. I'm evaluating the alternative for replacing my aging IRIS fleet.

Maybe, 3DR & Gopro are in co-hoots 1 more time for the GoPro 5?
This should up the anti for quality of Video that Solo can produce?

For now, when I need AP, I have phantom I can count on. But for survey, my groundstation software only work with APM base vehicles. If Solo can't cut it. I have to cut my lost and migrate to other platform.

Btw, has anyone tried the kodak 2 cam vr setup, Does the cam overload the Solo?
