Hey guys so I was looking at this kickstarter project and it looked promising but a friend of mine had told me FPV goggles were essentially illegal in the US. I know near nothing about FPV or the legislation behind it but that was the main selling point of that drone.. it gave you the "VR" sensation of being the drone itself. Ultimately it got cancelled and funding was suspended though the reason is still a bit unclear.

Anywho whats the word about FPV goggles in the US?

Have you read the FAA regulations that we are all now under and have to abide by? You must maintain visual line of sight with the uav. If both of your eyes are covered, that's kind of impossible.

Here's a fun read of what you are required to do: Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) Regulations & Policies

Here are the "basics":
  • Fly below 400 feet and remain clear of surrounding obstacles
  • Keep the aircraft within visual line of sight at all times
  • Remain well clear of and do not interfere with manned aircraft operations
  • Don't fly within 5 miles of an airport unless you contact the airport and control tower before flying
  • Don't fly near people or stadiums
  • Don't fly an aircraft that weighs more than 55 lbs
  • Don't be careless or reckless with your unmanned aircraft – you could be fined for endangering people or other aircraft
