so what are the rules? I'm in the black hills and obviously I won't be flying around mt Rushmore but what about at our campsites? Little grey here and I can't find a solid answer

Thx!

No flying in National Parks.
Can fly in National Forests.

That is the simple answer. There is a Federal ban on drones in National Parks, though I've heard some rangers will turn a blind eye depending on the park, the amount of visitors present, presence of wildlife, etc.

National Forests are still free to fly in at this point.

In reference to the "blind eye"

A guy in Hawaii got tasered after an argument with a ranger over flying a 3 oz. drone. Only fly in a National Park knowing that you will not be "legal" and be willing to live with the consequences. And don't argue with the ranger - cause you will be in the wrong.

Yes, as GoodnNuff said...OK for Forest Service area. Still a no-no in National Parks.

If ndfellow can't pinpoint the exact boundary of Mt. Rushmore National Park, The Badlands, The NPS area surrounding Jewel Cave, etc. vs. the adjoining National Forest, he could be inadvertently in the wrong.

I updated my previous post as to be more clear what I was saying.
