A free app takes an interesting approach to detecting 'drones' in your area..

I wouldn't be surprised if all it does is look at the SSID and/or MAC address of the broadcasting AP itself which is usually the controller.

If the drone is further away from the operator, you probably won't even see it in the app even if the drone is hovering right above you.

This is of course just speculation.
