curious about connecting an iPad or iPhone to the solo controller via HDMI cable.

Will this feed video & control via the cable and negate the need for the wireless connection between the solo and phone / tablet directly?

No. It will be video feed only. You wont have app control or even telemetry. Its a raw video feed.
