getting a solo with a different operating system than controller?

how would that work if i get a solo or a cpu board that has a different operating system than the controller? i have open solo 3.0. do i have to get a solo that has open solo 3.0

If you get something that has the original solo firmware on it, can you can just upgrade it to open solo after you get it just like you did to the one you already have.
