On the one hand, geo-fencing could solve some problems. On the other hand, it poses new ones. As per the FAA rules, you can't fly within a 5 mile radius of airports *without first contacting them and alerting them to your plans*. And it should be noted that you don't have to contact the airport to receive permission - only to alert them to your flight plan. As I discovered a few months ago, a 5 mile radius around every public airport covers something like 47% of the entire land mass of the continental US, making it more likely than not that anyone flying will be within 5 miles of an airport since airports are typically located in populated areas, not in the middle of nowhere.

So a hard-coded geo-fence would limit flights even when an operator has contacted a local airport and is in full compliance of FAA rules.

This whole thing is turning into a total cluster-you-know-what.
