I have a brand new solo that's only flown once. Is open solo a new firmware that I can install on my controller and drone instead of using the version that it all came with from the factory? Sorry if this is a noob question.

Thanks!

YES.
Open Source 3.0.0
Put open Source in search bar and Pedals to Paddles detailed instructions should pop up.
Not difficult, takes about 10 to 15 minutes.
Follow his instructions to the “T”.
Then you can cut all ties with 3DR.
You will get more detailed info from members as soon as they wake up.

So you feel sure that all the bugs have been worked out of Open Solo by now? Well, as certain as one can be. No flyaways yet huh?

And no longer dependent on 3DR-
now that last guy can turn out the lights and go home.
One last question, should I stear clear of Tower as well? Not that I ever used it but I did install it once upon a time. Hey if you have any good reads for Open Solo I'd to take a look at some to really get familiarized with it, thanks again

Try reading this
It will tell you the new features of Open Solo and the difference between Open Solo on a Green Cube and Open Solo on a stock bird. I use Open Solo on all my drones and I haven't had any issues with it whatsoever.

Is it true to say that a stock bird would not have arducopter installed on it either?

What Pedals2Paddles said... The link you were given explains what versions of what software are installed on your solo depending on whether it's a stock cube or a green cube. So read the information given in that link.

A stock solo came with a heavily customized branch of ArduCopter 3.3 that was specifically designed for the solo by 3DR. Since 3DR has been out of business for a couple of years now, this hasn't been updated since 2016.
