Hello,

I am new to this forum. I got my Solo about this time in August while I was out of the country. I got home last week and opened up my box and got a few flights in before my controller failed. I am waiting on a replacement now.

In the meantime, I have been doing some extensive research about features, firmware, 3DR, RMA process, frequency of failures. Overall, I'm not super impressed and a little disappointed by what I am reading. It doesn't appear that I bought exactly what I thought I bought.

That said, It DOES appear, that once I get a stable controller and drone in my hands, I'll have a fairly capable system. A system that will still, in many ways, beat most other drones on the market. It will lack a few of the advertised features and I'll probably never get them. Oh well, I'll use the ones I have.

That got me thinking. Where are the developers? Where are the custom apps? I found Solex and Tower - and I think Tower might actually be a 3DR product. Where are the custom features? Where are the people using the SDK and DroneKit - or are those the same things?

With how big the DIY drone industry got, I expected this one would have a huge DIY group to go with it? I would really like to get into that myself but am really struggling to find a good guide to get started.

It's been a while since I have done this style of programming. I think I'm ready to get back into it. Any suggestions, tips, or other forums I should be reading at?

Edit: I should note, I have read the sticky in this forum. It's just not very extensive or have a ton of discussions and collaboration.

Have a look at www.Ardupilot.com there is a dev section. There are some facebook groups you can join too, Solo mod club. Also check out the partly completed solo dev site on 3dr's pages.

What advertised features are not present?

there are a ton of developers doing things with solo. those things aren't necessarily being promoted or pushed back in the wild for general consumption. i've seen some cool things being done with solo such as blood sample delivery, mosquito population analysis, atmospheric noise receiver, etc.

the sdk is dronekit. it allows you to write code that lives on solo (dronekit-python) or write an android app that interacts with solo (dronekit-android). dronekit-ios and dronekit-cloud are dead. it would be nice if 3DR updated their site.

if you want to talk development dronekit has a discuss site, gitter rooms as well as the git repo. you'll find more devs over there.

Good Info. I was struggling to find a clear definition of the difference between python and android. I just got my replacement Solo - time to get to work
