Messed up but didn't notice until batts empty ----- I forgot to remove foam pad from gimbal.

Only you can answer that question...have you tried it without the foam block?
I would think the gimbal would overload by being restricted. Normally the gimbal will go limp if overloaded, strong winds as an example, which is a temporary condition until the gimbal resets.
I'm not sure how your situation would play out. If it smells like burned electronics then you'll have an answer. The "what" is burnt is the next question...
