Not sure why that would be, I am using the Nexus 7 on 5.1.1 without issue.
Perhaps step back to an earlier android version and try the install again, if that ius possible.
Or, look for vid on YT titled something like "How to install Solo on an incompatible device" it shows how to put Solo (or any android app for that matter) onto an android.

If you're using an older version of the Nexus 7, I do not believe it's officially supported.
You'll probably have to use the Beta version of the App:
Solo beta App....for android devices not compatible with the main app | 3D Robotics Drone Forum
I use that on my Sony Xperia Z Ultra, and it works just fine.
Any idea how old is "too old"? I'd like to get a cheap Nexus 7 which would be an older one.

So, I'd say the 2012 version would need to use the Beta version—the 2013 version should be fine, tho.
