GPS satellites

I remember that at the beginning when they started the first mods, one of the mods allowed Russians grab GPS satellites as a benefit to having more number of satellites. When I came upgrade 3dr and resolve problems gps, still allows working with these satellites? Or it depends on changing the hardware?

there is a mod where you can do that, but the verdict is out that it is a silver bullet
the firmware upgrades to the existing hardware seem to have helped most people
