Why does the solo need smart batteries more than any other drone running ardupilot?

It was designed that way. It doesn't have a voltage or current pin available to connect a standard power module like most do.

Wouldnt it be easier to connect it to a I2c power module than to have to pay $40 or extract an old BMS?

The Solo BMS or BMSOne provides the data the SoloLink system expects when set to the default Solo Battery. Actual Capacity, percentage remaining, individual cell voltages, battery temperature... With a regular power module you just get voltage and current. Which power module are you talking about exactly?

To be honest I don't know anything about power mdules.
