Can I connect a 3DR telemetry radio to Solo?

I'd like to control the Solo via 3DR telemetry radios (perhaps for greater control range vs wifi). Is there a way to connect a telemetry radio to the Solo? Thanks...

Unless you're a waiver holder, better antennas will get you all the range you're legally allowed. [VLOS]

To answer the question - it is possible, if slightly involved, to connect a TELEMETRY radio. But that *will not* allow you to control anything. It is a -telemetry- system, not a control link...

You can, it uses mavlink. I’d suggest it would be best to only use a ‘simplex’ connection if possible, that is, only connect the TX from solo to RX of telem radio.

As mentioned above, this will not give you control, just telemetry.

Are you sure about this "no control" guys?

Normally a person CAN control via telemetry when flying various 3DR/APM/Pixhawk products. I've done this myself in the past with a Pixhawk-based airframe.

Is it possible? Yes, of course.

Is it easy or even just mildly difficult? I'd say no. It is an expert level reconfiguration on a Solo in my opinion.

If you connect in duplex mode then yes, you can use MP, QGC etc to send commands, waypoints, flight plans over Mavlink.

Could connect it to the serial pins on the accessory port fairly easily I’d suspect.

Quick and dirty, connected to Serial 2 on accessory port. Apologies for the poor photo quality. Not necessarily recommending this, it might well be fine, but you’d need to research it to make sure. Connecting MP via solo’s wifi is common, not sure if there are any differences/caveats when using uart. Simplex would definitely be fine, but only gives downstream telemetry as previously noted.
