He must have been a UPS dropout. 
I personally watched a piece of luggage fall out the cargo door of a passenger airliner onto the tarmac one time while they were loading. I never check mine. And here is a tip, if you carry it in a hard case, be sure to release the pressure valve before you fly. Otherwise, your case with compress when you land and it can damage the contents inside.
