Am a new Solo and owner and apologize if this topic has been beaten into the ground already. I am looking to add higher quality still photo capability by static mounting a mirrorless camera like a Sony a5100. Setting the camera to trigger every few seconds is not optimal and takes away many techniques like HDR bracketing.

Am not familiar with the Solo's internal controller board. Is there a port on 3dr solo which can be controlled by the Solo's radio and where one could connect remote control devices? There may be products that could do the trick. Otherwise a separate radio/receiver connected to the camera may be the only solution.

Camera Shutter Configuration in Mission Planner — Copter documentation

The instructions above are how to achieve this with arducopter master, the solo has very specific firmware so its different, you may be able to control the shutter using channel 6 or 7 on the solo controller do some searching on how to grab the PWM signals, it will involve soldering and parameter changes in mission planner. Or there might be a simpler way using Mavlink I'm not sure about that approach though?

There are discussions on this topic here >> https://3drpilots.com/threads/aerial-imaging.10005/page-4#post-109434
