We recently got a drone for my dad. He is trying to set it up and has downloaded the app and followed the instructions. But each time he goes to connect to the solo wifi to do the initial update the wifi says "connected" but then in yellow it says "not connected to the internet" we keep resetting everything and trying again but continue to have the same issue.
Any suggestions on what we may be doing wrong or how to fix this so he can get started?

That is normal, ignore that. When you are connected to the Solo that is it: a point to point connection. There is no internet.
What will happen is you will connect your device's WIFI to the solo, run the Solo App, it will want to update your controller and Solo (first time only) and for that it needs to download from the internet. So then you disconnect from the Solo, reconnect to the internet and the updated firmware(s) will be downloaded. Then you will reconnect to the Solo WIFI and the firmware(s) just downloaded from the internet will be uploaded to the controller and to the Solo.

That's what it's supposed to do. The Solo uses your wifi link, and your mobile phone uses the 4G link to get internet when you're flying. As NightStorm said, ignore it and keep moving.
