Who knows where it will end up but if the information posted here ends up being an accurate description of where the FAA is headed with its rules, that can only be good news for flyers:

The report Zeets published provides insights into what the FAA considered and rejected while crafting regulations for small drones (those weighing less than 55 pounds, also known as sUAS). The reportsuggests that the FAA will adopt a regulatory approach far more favorable to the operation of drones than many expected. According to the report the FAA has decided to adopt a “minimally burdensome rule” for drones.

Published Feb. 14, 2015. Things have moved along quite a bit since then, and they will be rolling out a free registration process for UAV owners at the end of this year.

A FAA task force has finished their meetings earlier this month regarding the UAS registration process.

Huerta Announces UAS Registration Task Force Members

They are looking at which type of UAS need to be registered, how the registration process could encourage or require operators to become familiar with safety rules, and how the UAS would be marked. They also suggest not to hire a firm to help you through the future process.
