I was recently gifted with a 3DR Solo with gimbal. I'm super excited to fly, but I have no GoPro or a static mount to leave empty. I assume that the gimbal, minus a GoPro is just going to flop around and get damaged if I attempt a flight which I obviously want to avoid. Aside from leaving the foam stabilizing block in the gimbal, which I assume will also cause damage, and purchasing a static mount, what are my options?

take the gimbal out completely and fly it without
You could I suppose disconnect the gimbal and block it
but you are correct, powering it with the block or without a camera will cause issues

Welcome, Cory. Pyrate is absolutely correct about not powering on Solo without the camera in the gimbal. The gimbal was designed to work with the weight of the camera installed. Using it without the camera will be a problem. If you don't want to fly with a camera, do as pyrate suggested, and simply remove the gimbal. It is an easy process, and there are videos on here to show you how. Good luck to you.
