I have downloaded the FAA program and been testing it. It is pretty useless. It lists about 5 overlapping airports within 5 miles of my house. None of these are real airports. They are all emergency heliports that are unmanned and therefore there is no one to call and get permission to fly!!!

Pretty useless info.

Confirms my worst fears about government competence.

You seem to have your information wrong. You do not call the tower for permission, you call to notify them of your flight plans.

Public Law 112-95, Section 336 requires model aircraft operators to notify the airport operator and air traffic control tower (if one is located at the airport) prior to operating within 5 miles of an airport.

The point is these are "unmanned" heliports. There are no humans to contract. There are no phone numbers to call.

That is why the one part is in parenthesis, if there is one you call, if there is not it is obviously a small unmanned airport and you should encounter little to no air traffic. ;)

Thanks for that Monte. It is a pleasure to welcome you to the 3DR Pilots forum. I hope that you will take advantage of the benefits that come with membership and that you will be able to use the forum for the exchange of innovative ideas and as a resource for current developments in 3DR UAV’s.

Monite and LUVMyTJ thanks for the info,

I am a non current private pilot and should have looked up the info on AIrNav myself. I was disappointed in the app since I knew there were no active airports within 5 miles only private and emergency helipads with no contact info on the app.

Thanks again,
Ron

Cheers guys and thanks for the welcome. Everyone in these areas should consider AirNav and AirMap as a handy tool before getting flying in sensitive areas. Remember, LA has pending charges against UAS pilots for flying near schools and Heli Pads. For your own sake you should always document those approvals in writing in case management changes or outside influences step in. Remember it is within their authority to deny you to fly and that can be an entire different argument. Be safe, be aware, enjoy the hobby.
