There are always safety measures and precautions you can take, along with waivers or authorizations from the FAA you can obtain to fly in places like that. So yes there is a way to do it safety if someone wanted to.
Fair enough, just seemed like the intent of the question was to know if it was even feasible. So you’re right, certainly sounds like an unsafe thing to try without some type if safety measures in place.
What you want to do will work just fine. Just put it in manual flight mode then fly out till you get GPS and hit the FLY button. The point where the Solo got a GPS lock will become the Home point.
That would probably power the GoPro session but the Solo software only works with Hero 3 & 4 units. So you wouldn’t have camera control or anything like that.
So to call up a saved shot you just go into the smart shot screen and there will be a button called Saved Shots. That is how you bring up a saved shot to use later.
One thing that sticks out to me is that you are hitting the Fly button once it has landed. You should just try holding the left stick down until the motors stop. I suspect that hitting the Fly button while doing this is causing your issues. Hopefully this helps!
