If I can add my pennies worth ( being from the UK!) I can confirm that the Hero3+ Silver is not compatible with the 3 Axis gimbal (I had one) I think this is stated on the 3DR website

I think it's all about what you want out of your machine and what you intended to do with it before you bought it. In this fast expanding industry, you can't compare machines that have been released even six months apart anymore! This of course, is only my opinion.

Can anyone recommend a UK based company that can fit or supply a rectilinear lens for the GoPro 4 similar to what Peau Productions offer. Can the camera still be used in its original housings after the mod?

I was only replying thinking that you may have had a fix as I've read on other places on the forum that some people have had some success with my model. I couldn't find a definitive answer whether my model was compatible. Some of the info that 3DR has given out is in my opinion a bit misleading...
