It depends on what you're using, if it's Android, then you should use a program called "Solex". It's a fantastic app for controlling the 3DR solo, it's far far better than the 3DR app (which I don't think has been updated in a number of years). Honestly, Solex is just amazing.

Yes, also calibrating the sensors? Do you mean the IMU? Are you saying both the IMU and Compass calibrations fail? (they are two seperate systems and two seperate calibrations). Smacking the belly MAY help with an IMU calibration error, but it won't do squat for a compass error.

Yes, for instance if you're using side pilot, you can switch to Solex providing you land your bird, disconnect sidepilot from your controller (usually by powering off sidepilot), open up Solex, connect to your controller with your android device, then take off again.

If you're using the original 3DR app, then that in itself could be an issue. The app is over 5 years old at this point and has pretty much never been updated (since 3DR went out of business and all). I believe there are workarounds that may help, but you'd be better off with using Solex.
